History of the Dance
Oriental dance or bellydance, as it has been labeled in the United States, dates
back to matriarchal civilizations. The true history is that the dance was first performed as a birth ritual
among archaic tribes. To assist women in childbirth and to ease the pain, other tribal women would imitate the labor
contractions with their movements, reminding her to use her abdominal muscles to do the same. The dance was also done to
celebrate the different cycles of the year. Over the years the dance form has often been misunderstood, but to
the professional bellydancer this rich history always underlies this ancient art form.

Bellydancers love Baksheesh!
Well, what is it? Baksheesh is the ancient art of tipping the dancer. In the ancient times, Women would earn
their own dowries by dancing from town to town. They would sew coins into their costumes to keep others from stealing
it, thus the coin costume was born. Today, the bellydancer still earns a large portion of her wages by the customer's
tips. Tipping is customary, but use discretion regarding the placement of tips. The appropriate places are on
the side of the waist belt and along the shoulder straps of the bellydancer's costume. The tipping ritual can
add great fun for the whole family to your special evening.
